At the end of World War II, Japan was defeated and forced to give up its military forces, endure American occupation, and also give up its colonies - most importantly, Korea. Japan had ruled Korea since 1910, using Korean labor and resources to help aid the economy and eventual war efforts.
Once Korea gained this independence, it was divided by the Soviet Union and United States along the 38th parallel, with a communist government based in the North, and a democratic, US friendly regime installed in the South. This led to an outbreak of conflict between these systems which resulted in a three year war from 1950-1953, involving Americans, Koreans, Chinese, and the Soviet Union. The armistice signed in 1953 ended fighting for the time being, leaving the 38th parallel as a demilitarized zone to separate the two countries.
Now, 60 years later, North Korea is led by 29-year old leader Kim Jong Un, who has issued numerous hostile statements and threats to its neighbors and the United States in recent months (even declarations of a "State of War" and use of nuclear weapons). Since February, Diplomats have discussed possible courses of action and the actual likeliness of North Korea following through on these threats.

ReplyDeleteI agree that South Korea and Japan are our responsibility, but I believe an attack on North Korea would be the worst possible strategy for settling the conflict. North Korea has one of the most protected borders in the world. They would see an attack as a wage of war and possibly declare war on the U.S. and this could potentially start WWIII.

ReplyDeleteThe United States would get involved. Already threats of nuclear war from them makes the whole world worry. The bombs on hiroshima killed lots of people but just imagine that N. korea bomb san diego or las vegas with a nuke. the loss of life would be gigantic. I think they would fight in n. korea just to quickly end the threat. if the were to use nuclear weapons they are giving the world less and less land to work with the radiation destroying wild life. This is why they would interviene.

ReplyDelete[BeastB4Birth] in right in saying if the united state does not get involved as soon as Korea strikes, it could lead to World War Three. we've had to world wars and they were the biggest wars since humanity. almost every Continent fighting against each other where millions upon millions of lives were lost. another world war is enough to get attention in all countries including the us but if another world war does break, especially with Korea, it will most likely far more devastating than anything anyone has ever experienced. with all the new technology, many more live, money, land, etc. will be lost. this is because it may be a nuclear war. nuclear weapons kill ton of people with just a push of a button. dropping just two on the most dedicated countries in the world caused it to surrender in a matter of days. they killed over a million people and that war many years ago. nuclear weapons will result in total war and could potentially destroy the world.

The United States wants to stop the spread of communism and start spreading capitalism. ReplyDeleteI believe that the U.S. should be somewhat involved in this conflict because the United States is a possible target.This is a threat that should be taken seriously due to the past events with nuclear weapons in Japan during WWII. We saw the devastating effects of those bombs and we should be concerned what the fate of our country would be if we were hit. The U.S. needs to find a way to intervene without provoking North Korea into bombing the U.S. because this could possibly lead to a WWIII. WWIII could lead to a world in catastrophe due to all of the atomic weapons and threats. The U.S. should basically meet with the United Nations to discuss how to handle,contain and overthrow the North Korean government.

I think this because those are our allies and nobody messes with our allies without a fight. Also if they would use nuclear weapons I think the whole world would declare war on them. I think this because if they would use nuclear weapons without a reason, it would be inhumane.

In the event of an attack on South Korea by North Korea the U.S. would fire a nuclear missile at North Korea and if North Korea was not completly crippled they would fire a missile well inside of america if they have that missile operational.
